TARGET: Inventory for Sagebrush Spectrum

After trying to search the archives I need some help from the group.  My district
upgraded to Sagebrush Spectrum this fall.  Tight finances prevented us from
purchasing a hand held device for doing inventory.  Does anyone have suggestions
for compatible handhelds  other than the very expensive one provided by
Sagebrush?  Has anyone tried using a laptop with a scanner attached?  Any help is
appreciated.
