When reading this post regarding how to catalog abridged works, I remembered
an incident from a few years ago regarding a few abridged classics from our
own collection. Our public library also carries several abridged titles as
well.
Students, teachers, parents, media specialists, and public librarians need
to be aware that it may not be possible to pass a book report test in Reading
Counts and/or Accelerated Reader computerized book report programs as the
test is based on the original book. I always make students at my school aware
of this fact early on so that students will be aware they are taking a chance
when reading an abridged version of the original classic. I would never
discourage a student from checking them out, just helping to enlighten them to
this possibility.
