If you buy a hardbound encyclopedia, you _have a hardbound
encyclopedia.
It doesn't matter if the computers are down or if the internet
connection isn't working; you have the encyclopedias.
And you still have them even if the company goes out of
business, or if you decide to change publishers. With an online
source, it may be more current as far as updating goes, but you
have to pay _every _year to maintain your contract and have
the rights to use the material. Once you drop the contract -
pffft! - no more material. Whereas the print set will still be
there - pay for it once, keep it always.
There are other advantages too. Sometimes it's just easier
to spread some books out and compare what they say,
rather than bookmarking pages and going back and forth
in a browser. Plus print is easier on the eyes, and -
depending on screen/printer resolution - images and
graphs may actually be easier to read from a print set
than an electronic version.
(The advantages of the online version? Mulitple users and
currency are the two big ones in my estimation.)
