LmNet Friends,

A few days ago I asked help in finding a website for Mordicai Gerstein. =
Today one of our middle school students found this site:

http://www.mordicaigerstein.com/

I've featured _The Man Who Walked Between the Towers_in several =
storytimes this week. The kids were fascinated by this book and wanted =
to know more. I didn't have to coax students to research. This was a =
story they were interested in. As soon as we finished the book, kids =
rushed to the Internet to research. The middle school teacher who =
assisted with the story time remarked that this was probably the =
highlight of all storytimes we've ever done together. Just when I =
thought all the hounding about the biography section was to no avail, a =
student asked whether we had a biography of Petit!

The students asked such thoughtful questions and were quick to give an =
opinion as to the sanity of the wire walker. The highest compliment at =
my school is for a person to sign that something makes him sick. This is =
a slang sign used (at our school) when a person REALLY likes something. =
One boy signed three times that this book made him sick. I suggest we do =
away with the Caldecott gold seal and replace it with a sign language =
sticker that says "This book makes me sick!" (only kidding).

This book gives the opportunity to discuss with students important =
questions and since many of us were around in 1974, we can give witness =
to this event and place it in its historical context.
