Hi folks.
Late last year I sent a message to these three lists indicating that I had
developed a testing protocol to assess the effectiveness of Internet
filtering software.
Results are beginning to trickle in.
In the words of one tester, the results were "very disturbing."
In the words of another tester: "Despite having all filtering categories
turned on, "leakage" was much higher than I expected with failure to block
pornographic sites running from 22% to as high as 50%."
Based on some early feedback, I have slightly revised the test. I believe
that I have successfully sent the revision to those folks who requested the
first version.
Anyone else who is interested in this test, please contact me. I am sending
out the first two parts, which assess underblocking to anyone who asks --
except for filtering company executives and the like. IF YOU WANT TO CONDUCT
THIS TEST IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT YOU OBTAIN *WRITTEN* PERMISSION
FROM A HIGH RANKING SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR. THIS TEST REQUIRES ATTEMPTED
ACCESS TO PORNOGRPAHIC SITES. FAILURE TO GET PERMISSION COULD RESULT IN BAD
CONSEQUENCES FOR YOU!!! Please also DO NOT share the test or the results
with filtering companies. This could bias the test because they could
promptly correct the deficiencies identified in this particular test
protocol without addressing the underlying concerns.
At some time in the future I will provide access to results that are sent to
me, if the testers provide permission for such disclosure.
I am also looking for a few folks, preferably librarians because I trust you
the most ;-), to run a test for overblocking. You will not need permission
to run these tests because you will not be seeking access to inappropriate
sites.
