I have worked in my middle school setting for thirteen years now and have provided
graded lessons to every student in the school during that time. I also feel that
grades do provide some sense of validity, however, sone of them still have that
attitude that "It's just library." Unfortunately, so do their parents. I feel
it's sad that we even have to speak of something giving importance to library. One
of my soon-to-be-graduating seniors came back to visit and he said that they don't
know what a gift they have in that they are being given such a guided research
experience. My feelings about grading are mixed, especially with the end of the
second quarter approaching and having to calculate and manually post 625+ grades.
Definitely something to think about before anyone rushes in to be an advocate of
grading. It takes a great amount of time away from the students and the facility.
Cheers!
