I feel as if I'm the only one who didn't know how to do this. ;-) Lots of responses
came in, most describing how to use Draw in Word, right-clicking on the circles,
choosing 'no fill' to make both circles visible. Others suggested KidPix,
Inspiration, and the like, although I believe the task is easier with newer
versions of those programs. Inspiration 6 doesn't seem to have a place for making
Venns. Word 97 doesn't either, though Draw is fine.
An interesting website came from two people: http://www.venndiagram.com. Another
site is
http://www.educationworld.com/tools_templates/index.shtml#graphicOrganizers.
Several kind souls also attached examples or templates.
Thanks to everyone who replied with helpful suggestions. I'll keep it as simple as
possible for my grades 4-5, and we'll get the job done.

PS: Doesn't anybody do Windows? I still need to know what settings will make the
log-in window disappear automatically after a few seconds.
