You've just broken my librarian's heart by describing The Gift of the Magi
as archaic! I've taught this story before in grades 5-8 and I ended the lesson
by asking the students what they would give up for another person. The
discussion really took off and we even touched on organ transplants -- it was
amazing! Maybe if you find a way to personlize the story for the students the
beauty &meaning will come through.
