I never read an entire novel to 4-5th graders. I only see these students
once a week for 43 minutes minus book selection I have approximately 25
minutes. At that rate it would take 4-6 weeks to finish an entire novel.
Sometimes I'll read an excerpt to get them started. For example, around
Halloween. I ask the 4th graders to write down what a witch looks like. We
share a few. Then, I read the chapter from Roald Dahl's The Witches when
the grandmother describes a witch. After that I have a long list of
students who want to borrow the book. Or I'll read a chapter and then give
the book to the classroom teacher to finish. They can read everyday and
keep the momentum going.
I have sooo much to cover with the older students I can't tie up the number
of weeks it takes to cover a novel.
