Hello,
A few months ago I inquired about novels that had automobile racing as =
the theme. The books by Kent Wright and Don Keith were suggested. I =
acquired six of the series through Amazon and was quite impressed by the =
format and the quality of the writing. There are eight in the series to =
date:

#1 - White Lightning
#2 - Road to Daytona
#3 - Race to Glory
#4 - On to Talladega
#5 - Young Guns
#6 - First to the Flag
#7 - Inside Pass
#8 - On the Throttle

One other characteristic of the series that I like is that it charts =
the course of two drivers: Jodell Lee and Rob Wilder. Lee is patterned =
after the early NASCAR champions with Rob being looked on as his =
successor.

Many of the first NASCAR drivers learned their first racing skills =
running moonshine. This is not an urban legend. Here is a passage that =
I especially liked where Jodell is on a straightaway, putting distance =
between himself and a law officer:

"He kicked down hard on the throttle and the car leapt ahead like a =
freed deer. It cleared the next small raise as if it might actually =
take flight and then sailed down the strip of narrow, unlined blacktop =
highway into the night.

"This was the best time, the almost mystical time. Sometimes it felt =
as if he were not merely driving the car, but that the car had become a =
part of him. His hands were the steering box, willing the wheels which =
way to turn. His arms were an extension of the gearshift lever, linked =
straight to the transmission, determining which set of gears would mesh =
best. His feet on the gas and brake pedals were no longer simply a part =
of his body, but were now welded to the car itself, doing his will."

White Lightning by Kent Wright & Don Keith, pp. 16-17.

I really think that some YA book vendor should look into these titles. =
I haven't promoted them to students yet, but I'll let you know what kind =
of success I have.
