To add to what Cheri said about using books from recommended lists and finding them
inappropriate: a few years ago I used a Follett list of recommended elementary
books to order. When some of the unfamiliar titles came in I discovered that they
were in fact YA books and not for K-5 (my population). I went back to the Follett
catalog to discover that they considerd ELEMENTARY to be K-8.
My advice: don't order unfamiliar books from anyone's list until you check the
reviews out yourself.
