Thank you all so much for your replies. I am
overwhelmed at the number and variety of responses I
received. This is the best listserv out there.
Mary
Here's the list:
a)The Da Vinci Code (highly recommended by a number of
people.
No bad language or sex, and only a little violence. My
daughter, a junior, read it and was highly intrigued
by the author's premise that there is an ancient
secret society which exists to protect the true nature
of Christ, particularly his relationship with Mary
Magdalene. It's fiction, of course, and you have to
make that clear. But it goes into Grail legends, the
Opus Dei organization, the Knights Templar, and many
other historical entities. It's quite well researched,
and I think it would be interesting for students to
research Magdalene, the Gnostics, Da Vinci, the
Illuminati, etc, and separate fact from fiction.
b)Thomas Cahill books (How the Irish Saved
Civilization, Gifts of the Jews, and Desire of the
Everlasting Hills).
c) A History of God: the 4,000 Year Quest of Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam might be a good one to use. d)
For Buddhism, Robert Thurman (a professor at Columbia
with the added recognition factor of being Uma
Thurman's dad) is a very well-known Buddhism scholar
and has written very good books about Buddhism.
 e) Habibi by Naomi Shihab Nye's novel is about Islam
and Judaism in
Israel/Palestine. It's about an American teen of
Palestinian descent, who moves to Israel during high
school. She also has a book of poetry that is
wonderful called Nineteen Varieties of Gazelle. There
are a number of really wonderful f)Hindu writers also,
Arundhati Roy comes to mind though I'm not sure how
much of Hindu philosophy makes its way into her
novels.

g)Joseph and his brothers series by Thomas Mannold,
but faithful to the bible and of course well-written.
H)Facts on Files series that covers religions.

i) poetry of Rumi?

j)Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible?
