I asked for ideas for activities for my high school Library Club. Several asked
that I post the responses.
A couple of librarians said they called their club “Literary Club.” I asked my
members whether they would prefer this, and the vote was 100% of my 24 members to
change to Literary Club. In answer to other questions, we are not paid for
sponsoring the club. Our meetings are during school on “club meeting days”
which are set up by the administration.
Here are the responses:
-plan and host a Poetry Slam
-decorate the bulletin boards
-help with shelving, processing, basic data entry
-make suggestions for book purchases
-basic computer maintenance (emptying cookies, trash, temp internet files, running
defrag, etc.)
-sell items in the cafeteria at lunch to raise money for the library
-host a book sale--used books, or book fair
-field trip to a local college library--behind the scenes tour
-local librarians as guest speakers
-design a matching t-shirt
-run the book fair
-read to younger students at the elementary school
-discuss genres, books and authors
-do things during Library Month
-present a Murder Mystery Night in which all students can be involved. A kit from
Highsmith tells you how to do it
- we will be doing a coffee house night where students can hear other students read
poetry or talk about books they have read.
-organize book swaps and book collections for needy schools
-make book thongs (actually book marks made from beads and cording
-meet after school and eat snacks and talk about what we've been reading
-give first ops on new books that haven't been processed yet - book talk them
briefly and put a post-it-note on each book for them to reserve it once it's
processed
-have students make a 1-slide PowerPoint book review of a book they've read and
make a continuously running slide show of book reviews for students coming into the
library
Some of the things my club does:
-adopts the elementary special education students, providing parties, corresponding
with them, and reading to them every Friday when members’ class schedules allow
-have a contest during Teen Read Week and give away books as prizes
-donates books to the public or an elementary school library during Children’s
Book Week
-sponsors the Book Fair (which has been successful at the high school level)
-coordinates the collection of UPC’s from companies that have educational
promotions
Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas; I am already using some of them!
