On 9/11/03 my school was presented with a formal book challenge to Motown
and Didi by Walter Dean Myers. On 9/25/03 the committee met to make our
recommendation. The parent was present. She was amazed that we had all read
the book in its entirety (something it became obvious she had not done) and
that it totally changed one's perspective to have done so. The committee
was well prepared, professional and very supportive of the parent's right to
choose for their own child. Our final recommendation was to keep it a 6-8
checkout since we are K-8 and the content, while worthy, was not elementary
level. Lesson learned: Train your administrators! Mine were unaware of the
existence of a policy, the steps necessary to implement the policy and
unable to head this off for me at the initial point of contact!
Consequently the committee and I spent lots of hours preparing for something
that I truly believe, if handled properly at the beginning, could have been
avoided. "A free people continue to read somewhat freely at my school!"
