Here are a few things that work for me....
During story time, if they get antsy..... I have them stand and we do an
exercise together....
We do the actions as we say the words together....
We clap our hands
We touch our toes
We turn ourselves around
We clap our hands
We touch our toes
We jump up from the ground
We clap our hands
We touch our toes
We sit ourselves right down
We clap our hands
We touch our toes
We do not make a sound
I have found that giving K's simple crafts to make is very effective. We
read a short story and make a headband or coloring sheet to go with it.
With the headbands I cut strips of 12' long construction paper about 1 inch
wide. It takes two strips to make a headband big enough to fit a K. I
photocopy a pattern and staple it where the two strips meet. That way it
only takes one staple to put the two strips and pattern together. (I do
this beforehand.) I have the students color/decorate the pattern and the
headband strips. As they finish coloring, I custom fit the headband to each
child's head hold it in place as I take it off of them, then put in the
final staple. (We just did hats on headbands since the book fair theme was
Hats off to Reading and I put a sticker on the side with book fair dates and
times. I found clip art of cowboy, chef, police, bonnets, etc. to use as my
patterns.)
I also use coloring sheets to go along with my lessons. We will read
Franklin stories and I have them color a large picture of Franklin. I then
ask them to put in background and foreground details. If we have time, I
have students dictate a story to go with the illustration to stress
beginning, middle and end.
Hope this is useful .
