GEN: copying print cartoons

Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked before, I didn't find it.

Is it a copyright violation to print a student's drawing of a cartoon
character like Sponge Bob, Bugs Bunny, etc.in the school newspaper? It is
in a page of art works by students and it is very realistic.
