"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do
nothing."
Edmund Burke
ALA "Bill Of Rights", "Access To Resources And Services In The School
Library Media Program", and the book: "Information Power: Guidelines For
School Library Media Programs" were adopted by the USD 470 Board of
Education.
Are the above ALA documents and other ALA statements "principles" and
standards which should guide practicing librarians? Can we base our
librarianship on the above?
Do school districts adopt and embrace the ALA and its statements with
the intention of following them, or do they adopt them believing they
are are only "ideals" and recommendations? Also, could the above
documents be adopted just because they look impressive being in their
board policies?
On October 15, 2003, I filed a 200 page civil suit in federal court.
For those librarians interested in the above "principles", academic
freedom, constitutional issues, and librarianship, feel free to visit
the "Hicks v. USD 470" website at
