May run out of time before I get this all done, if so, will post rest
Monday. 2 themes reappeared the most.
1. Many found lysol eliminated the mold, did read not to use aresol cans
in a moldy are, one used lysol almost full strength, just make sure books
are very dry before putting back on shelf.
2. About the same number felt that insurance picking up the tab for
cleaning is a lot cheaper than replacing the books.
3. Liquid bleach with Tide and HOT water.
Bleach and water
Bleach may not be good for some bindings and if you spill it on
carpeting you have a mess, and it stinks.
4. Chemical in 5 gal bucket with holes in the bottom set in a larger
bucket for the water to collect, this draws moisture from the air.
5. Contact ALA, which I haven't done yet, thought I'd check out their
website.
6. Mild solution of Ivory soap; sun; laundry softener sheets for odor
control
7. Throw away books with mold.
8. A conservationist specialist recommended taking books out in sun
while wearing a mask and with a fin hair brush, brush.
9. Dehumidifier
10.Place a sample of books in plastic to use as evidence if insurance
company doesn't come through, also keep list of books and barcodes
infected, wsash shelves with clorox and water and beware of health
problems, get a machine to measure humidity in library. Same writer later
had an experience with a school that shut down and bussed all to another
school until mold problem was eliminated (high-risk asthma area)MEDLIB has
good info on health problems with mold. (I couldn't find it but a search
found some other things I passed on to our faculty)
11.Put books in a plastic bag with kitty litter.
12.Several found microwaving worked for them. (ok, if you have just a
few, we have at least 2,000.
13.some wonderful cleaner from maintenance that killed mold but not on
older cloth-bound books.
Thanks so much for all your help and advice. We're all hoping we don't get
sick, insurance sends in an expert to clean the building, carpets, etc.
Library was not the only area hit. I'm emptying the dehumidifier and
watching for the mold to reappear and getting my winter wardrobe out so I
don't freeze in my 65degree library.
