Grade Level: 5

Subject(s):

  • Social Studies/Geography
Duration: 3 months

Description: Students will use different types of resources (computer software, research books, etc.) to find the climate, landforms, natural resources, government officials, etc. of a specific state.

Goals: Students will acquire the skills needed to research using an almanac, an atlas, the Internet, computer software, and tour books. Students will learn many exciting things about a US State.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to use many types of resources to research a US State.
2. Each student will prepare a report about his/her state.

Materials:

  • almanac
  • atlas
  • access to the internet
  • oak-tag tour books
  • encyclopedias
  • Children's US Atlas CD
Procedure:
1. Send a letter home to parents informing them of the research project their child will be doing in class.
2. Ask each child to bring in their own atlas and almanac.
3. Have students choose a state they would like to research.
4. Review the format of a business letter.
5. Each student writes a business letter to his/her state's tourism department requesting free materials about the state.
6. Inform students that they will be required to make a poster size illustration of their state. The poster will include landforms, the state capital, ten cities, state nickname, state motto, tourist attractions, population, and government officials. The poster should be colorful and in the shape of the actual state.
7. Students receive an outline stating exactly what they are required to research for the written report: capital, ten cities, state flower, state bird, state nickname, landforms, state motto, industry/products, tourist attractions, famous people, population, and government officials. Certain topics will be in the form of a list, and others will be written in paragraph form.
8. Each students illustrates the state's flag on a 5x8 index card. The illustration must cover the entire card.
9. Students will be working in class researching their reports until all information is found.
10. Students bind their information into a booklet, and then they present their findings to the class.

Assessment: The final written report and poster.
