Description: This lesson plan is intended for those students that have a grasp of the concept of homophones. It’s a fun activity, and it will help reinforce what the students have already learned. For the teachers that will be doing this for the first time, it may seem like a lot of work. Once you’ve created and laminated the game pieces your work is done, and they can be used again year after year.

Goal: The students will understand the basics of homophones.

Objectives: The students will:
1. Put chips in the correct sections on their bingo boards when the sentences describing homophones are read.

2. Use their knowledge of homophones to determine the difference between them, and properly fill in the correct sections on their game boards.

Background Information: This activity can be used with students of all ages. The key is that they will have to understand homophones before they can do this activity.  It’s fun, and should be done at the end of the day of during spare time.  I used this activity after we had covered homophones, and the students showed a great understanding of the concepts.  Prizes can be given out to the winners!

Concepts: The students will be able to:
1. use what they have learned from the lessons taught.
2. apply their knowledge of homophones to win prizes.

Materials:

  • Game Boards
  • Markers
  • Word list
  • Container to draw words from
  • Construction Paper squares for the students to cover up their board

Procedures:
 1.  Create the game boards.
 2.  Create the homophone word list.
 3.  Hand out bingo boards.
 4.  Handout word lists.
 5.  Draw the words out of a hat, and use them in a sentence.
 6.  When a students says BINGO check their board, and if correct, give them a prize. Assessment:
Assessment isn’t really important here, because this is a fun activity and the students should have already been assessed before hand.  If they don’t understand the concepts of homophones they shouldn’t be able to take part in the fun activity.
