Teacher's Rationale:
The primary child will begin this unit by learning about Abraham Lincoln, tracing his history from boyhood to his leadership during Civil War times.
The children will be exposed to the historical background of slavery in the
colonies, the dehumanizing effects it had on African Americans and the way
slaves and others tried to gain freedom for these African Americans. The
children will listen to true stories and those based on true incidents about
this era so that they can begin to think about the institution of slavery and
why people would risk their lives to help those forced into it.
