Description:
Students will use paper bags to create stories that resemble old Indian leather paintings.
Goal:To have the students think about what life was like in an Indian tribe and how they communicated their stories on to their children.
Objectives:1.Students will think of telling a story using only pictures
2.Students will draw their story on their leather (paper bag)
Background Information:This is at least a two day project. Steps 1-4 the first day.
The students can tell a story about their life or make a story related to Indians.
Concepts:Telling a story using only pictures and drawing them in sequence so others can read the story back.
Materials:Procedure:
1.Soak paper bag in water
2.Carefully open it into one piece
3.Crush the bag into a tight ball to ring out the water
4.Carefully smooth out the bag and let it dry on newspaper
5. Decide on the story that you want to tell
6.Think of some pictures that would accurately portray your story
7.Draw the pictures on the dried paper bag with crayons or markers
8.Rip fringes on the sides of the bag
9.If desired, paint over the crayoned picture with thinned brown paint (one half paint, one half water).
10.Write up a paragraph telling your story and attach it to the back of the leather paintings. Others can try to figure out your story and then check to see if they are close.
Assessment:1.Students follow directions given in class for making the leather.
2.Students portray their story with pictures on the leather.
3.Students write up their story they are trying to portray
4.Students will tell their story, using their leather paintings in small or large groups
