Grade Level: 2, 3, 4

Subject(s):

Duration: 1 hour

Description: Through this lesson the students will listen to a story about how the first Christmas tree was decorated.

Goals: Students will have an understanding of how the first Christmas was decorated.

Objectives: Students will be able to develop a rough draft of what they would decorate their Christmas tree with.

Teacher Materials: The Cobweb Christmas by Shirley Climo, other books related to the Christmas Tree.

Student Materials: paper, pencils, markers

Vocabulary:

Tradition: something that is passed down from one generation to the next. For example: At Christmas time it has become a tradition to give gifts to those you love.

Procedure:

Before reading, ask the students to look for ways the Christmas tree was decorated. Have students look at the types of decorations Tante used to decorate her Christmas Tree. Have students keep in mind what they would like their Christmas Tree to look like. Have students look for the traditions that Tante did every Christmas season. As the story is read, the students will be expected to have an idea on what their draft pictures of the Christmas tree they will come up with, will look like.

After reading the story we would brainstorm about what types of decorations they saw in the story and what types of decorations they would like to include in their Christmas Trees. Talk about some of the traditions that they may do over the Christmas season.

Assessment: Students will be able to produce a picture of what they would like to have as decorations on their Christmas Trees. Students will be able to tell what a decoration is used for. Students will have an understanding of the various traditions around the Christmas season.
