An Educator's Reference Desk Lesson Plan

Author: Bob Barnett
School or Affiliatoin: Kingfisher High School, OK
Endorsed by: These lesson plans are the result of the work of the teachers who have attended the Columbia Education Center's Summer Workshop. CEC is a consortium of teacher from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met at the Workshops.

Date: May 1994

Grade Level(s): 9, 10, 11, 12

Subject(s):

Overview:

Physics needs to be a class students can be creative in and enjoy. These same students can be the best science recruiters for younger students.

Purpose:

To help students be creative and involve younger students within the school system.

Objectives:

The students will:

  1. Students will be able to research a topic.
  2. Students will be able to adapt what is learned.
  3. Students will be able to teach lessons.
  4. Students will involve other students in their learning activities.

Resources/Materials:

Depends on concepts picked, Be Creative

Activities and Procedures:

  1. Students will need to identify reference material to find experiments and ways to show concepts in physics to younger students.
  2. Have students not use materials as listed in reference resources but make them substitute items and uses that will achieve the same results.
  3. In one or two days, students should become familiar with research reference materials.
  4. In one or two days of experimentation, students should should be familiar with concepts and their uses.
  5. Students will spend one day showing their labs and explaining their concepts to elementary and middle school students.

Notes for Instructor:

Instructor will need to guide students when they pick their concepts and their uses. Help students modify the labs. Example: If lab shows reaction between Hydrochloric Acid and Calcium give off CO2. Use eggs in Hydrochloric Acid mixed with water to float eggs with CO2 given off and clinging to eggs. Raises and lowers eggs in liquid.

The instructor will need to secure a time with elementary school for showing. You will be amazed at the increase in science interest that will be generated by elementary students.

Resources:

Vary.....Do not limit, "Magic", Physics, Chemistry, etc.
