Subject(s):
Description: Have students re-design a restaurant menu. The students will use adjectives to make the menus more appetizing.
Goals: To improve students' descriptive writing skills.
Objectives:
1. The students will be able to identify adjectives.
2. The students will be able to effectively use adjectives in writing.
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Give students a restaurant menu (it can be a menu from an actual restaurant or one that you created yourself).
2. Have the students brainstorm adjectives that will describe the food items.
( My students came up with words like heavenly, delightful, juicy, etc. to describe a hamburger).
3. Have the children write a short description using the adjectives that they came up with during the brainstorming session. (My students wrote: Try our heavenly, juicy, delightful hamburger. The tantalizing smell will make your mouth water).
5. Have the students underline the adjectives that they used.
4. Have the students illustrate their menus on a computer or on constructon paper.
Assessment:
Students should be assessed on accuracy (are the underlined words adjectives?), and creativity ( did they use descriptive words, was their menu's appearance appealing?). I suggest using a Rubric.
