Description: Student will write personal "Book of Virtues " modeled on the book The Book of Virtues by William J. Bennett.

Goals: Student will write and illustrate a 10 chapter book. Each chapter will describe a virtue using one of the types of writing required by the State of California for Fifth Grade

Objectives:

1. Students apply what they have learned about the differences in realistic fiction, fantasy, letter writing, poetry, personal narrative, biography, fable, tall tales, and newspaper reporting.
2. Students will also demonstrate understanding of a "virtue" as a positive trait such as responsibility, courage, faith, honesty, friendship, loyalty, patriotism, perseverance, work, and acceptance.

Materials: Copy of The Book of Virtues or The Book of Virtues for Young People by William J. Bennett.

Procedure:

1. Each lesson focuses on one virtue.
2. Define Virtue, a sample read that illustrates the virtue, pre write: student original writing to illustrate virtue using: designated format; peer editing, rewrite, teacher edit, illustrate and print.
3. Assemble pages to include: Title Page, Table of Contents, and Bibliography. Teacher will laminate covers and bind books.

Assessment: Finished book is evaluated on content and correct use of writing style.

Example: A student will illustrate the virtue of "Work" by writing a business letter to apply for an imaginary job. Student will stress attributes of willingness to work, dedication to job, completion of projects, and desire for work. Creativity and illustrations are bonus points
