Language Arts/Writing (composition)
Description: The students will be planning an itinerary or brochure
for a trip to a place of their choice. Through previous lessons and research, they will choose which area they would like to "visit". In their itinerary/brochure, the students will state where they are going (including a map of the location), sites they will see there and information that would be helpful for a tourist.
Goal: Students will research a destination of their choice and design
an itinerary or a brochure for a trip to that particular location.
Objective: The students will need to include the following in
their itinerary design:
-
5 facts that a tourist may find helpful about their destination in their itinerary/brochure.
-
4-5 sites you could visit while touring their location of choice in their itinerary/brochure.
-
a map of their chosen location in their itinerary/brochure.
Background information for the teacher: This activity could be
incorporated into a geography or social studies lesson. It could be used at any grade level, depending on the amount of research and information you would like them to include. You will need to have introduced a variety of places in the world so students have an idea of their options. The students may need help discussing where they may find the materials to complete their research.
Concepts covered in the lesson: The students will be able to use various resources to find the most gelpful and useful information on their topic to include in their itinerary/brochure. After the students have chosen their information, they will neatly design their brochure.
Materials:
- construction paper
- glue
- scissors
- pens/pencils/markers
- books from library
- computer
Procedure:
(1) After introducing various locations in the world, students will choose a destination to research.
(2) Students will go to the library or online to find 5 helpful facts, 4-5 sites to see at their destination and a map of their location.
(3) After they have found their information, the students will fold up construction paper into a pamphlet-like form and include the title of their topic on the first page.
(4) The students can either type out or neatly hand write the facts they found. They can either draw pictures or glue on pictures that could be found through magazines, books or the computer.
Assessment: To evaluate whether or not the students have met the
goals and objectives, you can simply look them over to make sure they have included the 5 facts, 4-5 sites and a map. You can also evaluate how much effort was put into the activity by teacher observation.
