Grade Level(s): 2

Subject(s):

Description:
This lesson is to be used with a second grade classroom. The idea is to have the children identify their feelings with the weather. The class will be given a weekly chart with boxes for each day of the week. The children will draw a picture for each day describing their feelings for the day. The children will use pictures of weather symbols to describe their day.

Goal:

The children will be able to identify their feelings in relation to the weather.

Objectives:

Background Information:

This activity can be used while discussing the weather with a classroom. The children will already have an understanding and previous knowledge of the weather symbols used on TV weather reports. The children will have discussed how different types of weather will and can affect your mood and feelings for the day.

Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Color Crayons or Markers
  • Procedure:

    1. Give each child a handout that includes the weather symbols used on TV with the weather channel.

    2. After handing this paper out, tell the children that sometimes our mood feels like the weather. For instance, today I feel sunny. This could mean that I feel warm, happy, or anything that the children want.

    3. The children will have a sheet of paper that they can draw on. Have them write the days of the week Monday through Friday on this sheet allotting space for a picture. They will then draw how they feel using the weather symbols for each day.

    Assessment:

    I will look at the papers each day. The children will be able to express their moods which will allow me to understand each child on a daily basis. It also allows the children to express themselves without having to write in words. I will simply use this project to help me in my everyday teaching, and the children will learn how to express their feelings.
