Nutrition is the key to feeling good about yourself. This lesson will allow students to study the five food groups and to learn about delicious, healthy foods. At the end of this lesson we will talk about different foods that are healthy. The last day of the lesson we will have a fun day and sample nutritious and delicious foods.
Goal:
Students will be aware of more healthy foods.
Objectives:

The students will prepare on paper a diagram of a food pyramid, without the help of his/her peers. The students will demonstrate their knowledge at a high level.

The students will select foods from each of the five food groups, given help from their textbook. At a minimum they will bring in two foods from each food group.

The students will evaluate for one week the foods they eat. They will record a daily log as given by the teacher. It will be from Monday thru Monday.
Background Information:
This activity could be modified to use with kindergarten-sixth grade. The lesson teaches students what foods are nutritious and delicious. An important thing to note is this lesson has the students actively involved and they need to be responsible for their activities.
Concepts:
Students will be able to:

Distinguish the difference between the food groups.

Identify how many servings of each group you need per day.
Materials:
Tag board
Paper, pens, and markers
Pictures of foods (from magazines, newspapers or students work)
Rulers
Procedure:

Have students on paper make an example food pyramid.
(Observe and answer questions) -
Write out instructions and make sure everyone has seen and heard them.

Bring out materials and have students know what is available before they can go and choose their materials.
Instructions:

Choose a color of tag board.
-
Take markers and draw a pyramid having the five food groups.

Fill in the food groups with pictures, either drawn or cut out from magazines or newspapers.

Label the food groups on the side of the pyramid, along with how many servings per day.
Assessment:

Students will present their boards to the class.
They will talk about their pictures they choose to use on their board.

The students will bring in two foods from each group and tell one student and the teacher what the food is and where it came from.

The student will hang up their daily log on the side of the tag board.
-
Tag boards will be hung on the wall outside the classroom for the other classrooms to see and critique.
