Description: This is "An Introduction to Computer Usage" for Kindergarten students who have only been to a computer lab once.

Goals: Kindergarten students in a computer lab will:

  1. identify and effectively use input and output devices.
  2. demonstrate the proper sequence of turning on the equipment.
  3. accurately use the keyboard and special keys on a microcomputer.
  4. choose the proper steps and order for the solution of a task.
  5. follow the ordered steps and give the correct output for a simple task.
Objectives: Students will be able to:
  1. manipulate input (keyboards, mouse) and output (printer and monitor) devices to create and print a greeting card.
  2. use developmentally appropriate software (Bailey's Book House) to follow sequential directions and proper steps to create and print their greeting card.
Materials: Procedure:

Day #1

(1) Explain to students what they are going to create a greeting card that they can take home.
(2) Show them examples of greeting cards that you have made.
(3) Explain that you will help each student by moving from one computer to the next.
(4) Walk around the room and point to the place on the screen where they are to double click to:

(a) start Bailey's Book House
(b) and single click to go to the greeting card creator
(c) try each of the different choices by pointing to them.
(6) At this point they will choose the type of card they want to create.
(7) Continue to monitor until they have completed their greeting card.
(8) When they are ready to print their card point to the printer icon.
(9) Let the students retrieve their creation.
(10) Be sure to compliment them on a good job.

Day #2

Repeat the steps from day #1.
(1) Encourage the students to make correct choices with less help from you.
(2) Monitor to see that students are using the keyboard and mouse properly.
(3) Offer extra help to students that are having trouble.
(4) Ask students that finish early to help someone who is having trouble.

Day #3

By now most if not all of the students will have mastered the lesson.
Re-teach only those students needing help.

Assessment: By Day #3 every student should be able to successfully create a greeting card with no help. Monitor how each student uses the keyboard and mouse and the end product will verify that the skills have been mastered.
