Off the Field and into the Stands

Overview:

This is a lesson of fun and enjoyment for the students in your music class. The students will learn about the National Anthem and its importance, do some singing, and create rhythm activities that can be used the next time they go to a big game.

Grade Level(s): 3, 4, 5, 6

Goal:

For students to gain some knowledge on the National Anthem, learn some new rhythmic and dance creations, and to be involved in some group interaction.

Objectives:

 1.  To emphasize the importance of the National Anthem.
 2.  To broaden the students knowledge beyond the game of baseball.
 3.  For students to recognize rhythmic activities at sporting events of all kinds.
 4.  To introduce students to other resources that relate to the game of baseball and the many other sporting events.

Concepts: Vocal/singing, rhythmic and dance creations, and group interaction.

Materials:

Song: "Take me out to the ball game".
Words to the song "Take me out to the ball game."
"National Anthem" either sung or played
Words to the "National Anthem."

Procedures:

  1. Fans (class) rise for the National Anthem.
  2. Class discussion: Importance of the National Anthem.
  3. "7th inning stretch" -Play the song "Take me out to the ballgame"
  4. Split the students into small groups (3-4 people per group) and have them develop a rhythm or dance creation that they have done or have heard at a ballgame.  Encourage students to make up something original. (example: The Wave)
  5. Groups will then share their creations with the class and they will get everyone in the class involved in their creations.

Assessment: Group interaction and participation.
